What is Co-Occurring Treatment?

Although it can vary from person to person, and program to program, the structure of the journey though recovery remains fundamentally similar across the board. If you are beginning the process of treatment, it can be helpful to know what is to come.

In the simplest terms, Co-occurring Treatment is when the same practitioner, or team of practitioners, provides mental health and substance use interventions in an integrated fashion to treat individuals struggling with teen drug use or who are alcohol dependent. Our programs offer customized support for clients, and your loved ones, and often combine a variety of group or individual counseling and behavioral therapy with peer support programs—like classic 12 step programs or Alcoholics Anonymous.

It’s no secret that the path to true sobriety and recovery is not easy or linear. It comes with many challenges and hardships, but even greater joys. It’s important to give yourself as much grace as you can along the way and know that what you are accomplishing is incredibly difficult and takes strength, resilience and determination.

Types of Treatment That We Offer

When beginning the journey to sobriety and recovery, it is normal to not know where to begin, what to search for and what to expect. There are so many options and treatments out there and that in itself can be daunting and intimidating. Having a good idea of what types of treatment there is, will give you a better understanding of what your needs may be and what the next best step is in your path.

Insight Northwest Recovery offers three levels of outpatient treatment programs.

Outpatient programs are optimal for clients who are:

  • transitioning from inpatient rehab programs

  • have completed medical detox

  • or have less severe or more “mild” addiction

All of our programs emphasize individual behavioral therapy and group counseling, as well as activity-based modules, peer support and case management.

Often, stepping away from life for three months is impossible, and our programs are designed to offer the same therapeutic benefits as a standard inpatient rehab program while allowing you to tend to your daily responsibilities. We want to help eliminate as many barriers to seeking treatment as we can and help you make recovery a part of your story.

Outpatient treatment programs have a variety of benefits, including flexibility around work and school schedules, and the ability to recover in a clean, safe, welcoming and structured environment. Additionally, our programs also seek to support and empower family and friends to be a part of your recovery process, and strengthen your support network outside of our doors.

The Levels of Outpatient Treatment That We Provide at Insight Northwest Recovery are:

1 - Intensive Day Treatment (PHP)

The outpatient treatment process begins with Intensive Day Treatment, also known as PHP or Partial Hospitalization. This step provides our clients the opportunity to participate in a daily structured treatment program that combines individual therapy, group therapy and education, and activity-based therapies. In this program, you would attend 5 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 4 weeks.

2 - Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)

Following PHP, clients will often move to the next step of our program, Intensive Outpatient Programs, or IOP. This step is slightly less intensive than PHP but offers many of the same benefits. Like PHP, you would meet for group education and counseling sessions and utilize activity-based therapies as part of your treatment plans. The IOP program runs in 3 hour group counseling sessions, 3 times per week, for 3 months.

3 - Outpatient / Aftercare

Once a client has completed one or more of the intensive outpatient programs, the next step is Outpatient / Aftercare. This step is meant to set you up for long-term recovery. This program provides access to individual counseling, psychiatry, and peer support for up to 12 months.

As you complete our programs, our goal is to ease you back into daily life without the burden of substance use.

About Alcohol and Drug Addiction

A majority of the substance use disorders we treat fall into the category of teen opioid addiction and alcohol dependence. Opioids run the gamut of illicit drugs to prescription drugs that are being abused. However, there is a reason that opioids are so addictive: These substances activate powerful reward centers in the brain, and release endorphins– the brain’s feel-good chemicals. These endorphins dull the user’s perception of pain, and temporarily boost feelings of happiness and overall well-being. Over time, the amount of opioids you need to reach that high increases, and individuals become ensnared by chasing the next high.

The Mayo Clinic has identified the following as risk factors for opioid addiction:

  • Poverty

  • Family or personal history of substance use disorders

  • Young age

  • Regular contact with high-risk people or environments

  • History of depression or anxiety disorder

  • Stressful circumstances

  • Heavy tobacco use

Additionally, women are more likely to experience opioid addiction as they have chronic pain more frequently than men, and are prescribed opioids in controlled doses by their primary care provider. Unfortunately, once an individual takes opioids it can become difficult to stop, and dependence can shift to a full-blown addiction.

Examples of the kinds of opioid drugs we treat for are below:

Like opioids, alcohol gives individuals the feeling of intense pleasure and joy, but also compromises impulse control and decision making. What starts as alcohol abuse can quickly morph into alcohol addiction. People drink for a variety of reasons, but the largest factor is that drinking alcohol releases dopamine and endorphins in the brain (creating a similar response as opioids). Alcohol is the most used substance in the United States today. According to the NCADD, 17.6 million people in America suffer from alcohol dependence and alcohol abuse.

As both opioids and alcohol impact the pleasure centers of the brain, we can use similar techniques to treat alcohol dependence or other substance use disorders. Often the dependency on these substances can trigger behavioral and mental health issues.. Going through treatment to manage the symptoms of mental health disorders such as anxiety disorder and depression, as well as managing withdrawal symptoms, is crucial to the recovery process.

What Withdrawal Symptoms Can Be Expected?

As individuals consume addictive substances regularly, the body begins to rely on them for survival. Breaking this dependence through detox is key to the recovery process, and gets individuals physically ready to fight their addictions. Typically, the detox process takes 7-10 days, but by the end of it clients are no longer at high risk for complications related to substance use. Withdrawal symptoms from drugs and alcohol are similar and should be managed by medical professionals.

These symptoms include:

  • Tremors

  • Sweating

  • Nausea

  • Dizziness

  • Headaches

  • Breathing Difficulties

Ideally, an individual would stop drinking and using drugs, and complete the withdrawal process before starting one of our programs under the supervision of their medical care team or through an inpatient treatment facility. While we do not offer medication support to aid in withdrawal symptoms, our programs leverage individual and group counseling, peer support and case management by one of our licensed therapists to help you achieve long-term recovery.
