What is Outpatient Treatment?

Our college student outpatient programs provide counseling, group therapy and peer support for individuals suffering from mental health issues, personality disorders, or drug and alcohol addiction in college.

Outpatient programs are a flexible, convenient option for busy students struggling with drug or alcohol addiction. This type of program allows you to receive treatment while continuing and maintaining your responsibilities such as school, work, etc. We understand the importance of fitting on-going recovery support into your life. Our outpatient programs provide a high level of structure and give you the coping skills and support you need to overcome your mental health and addiction issues while still being able to continue with your day-to-day life.

Our schedule at Insight Northwest Recovery’s outpatient center is pre-determined and varies based on the level of outpatient programs and the needs of our clients. These levels of treatment allow you to receive the care you need without having to reside at a facility and gradually help you integrate the skills you have learned into your life for long-term recovery.

Co-occurring Treatment for College Students

College can be an overwhelming experience for anyone – not to mention if you are dealing with mental health issues and/or drug addiction.

If you are a student, you may be exposed to:

  • New experiences

  • Stressful routines and social circles which can lead to an increased risk of drug use and alcohol use

  • Academic strains

  • Social pressures

  • Financial stress

These factors can all affect mental health and can make it easy to turn to substance use to cope.

The correlation between addiction and mental illness is not generally discussed. Substance use and mental health challenges can go hand in hand, so we feel it is often an effective course of action to address both. Often, addiction is actually a direct result of prior mental health issues – as an individual will turn to a substance or dependency that helps them to “cope” with the pain of their mental health challenges. If a student is suffering from depression or anxiety, they may turn to a behavior or a drug that releases dopamine, therefore easing their pain temporarily. Unfortunately, the individual seeking happiness or reprieve from their mental despair will actually only have their pain exacerbated, while also taking on a whole new set of pain; addiction.

While alcohol use remains the most prevalent type of addiction among college students, opioid addiction has also impacted this population. The rise in prescription opioid misuse, as well as the use of illicit opioids like heroin and synthetic opioids like fentanyl, has contributed to increased concerns about opioid addiction among college students. We are here to provide support and community resources to college students who may be struggling with addiction.

Alternatively, different forms of addiction can cause mental illness or behavioral health issues. The effects of addiction on your brain can almost always leave it starved for the proper chemicals it needs to balance in order to lead a healthy life beyond addiction. In these cases, a person who seeks addiction treatment might be given a dual diagnosis. We are able to manage medication for both addiction and mental health needs. When treated in tandem, the treatment plan can be extremely effective.

What is Integrated Treatment?

Cooccurring Disorder Treatment can also be referred to as integrated treatment or dual diagnosis treatment. It is an approach to treating individuals who have both a substance use disorder and a mental health disorder. These co-occurring disorders are very common, as students with mental health disorders may turn to substances as a way to self-medicate, which can lead to addiction.

At Insight Northwest Recovery, our approach takes into consideration that mental health challenges and substance use disorders are often intertwined and that successful treatment requires addressing both. Integrated treatment involves addressing both the substance use disorder and the mental health disorder simultaneously, while developing a treatment plan that supports your recovery long-term.
