Addiction & Mental Health FAQ

Treatment Programs

  • Addiction treatment is a comprehensive approach to treating individuals who struggle with substance use disorders or behavioral addictions. It aims to address the physical, psychological, and social aspects of addiction to help individuals overcome their dependence on substances or behaviors, achieve sobriety, and maintain long-term recovery.

Addiction treatment often involves a combination of evidence-based therapeutic interventions, support services, and medication management (when appropriate). These components may include detoxification, individual and group counseling, behavioral therapies, family therapy, peer support, and aftercare planning.

Programs are tailored to each individual's unique needs and experiences, taking into account the severity of the addiction, the presence of any co-occurring mental health issues, and other personal factors.

The primary goals of rehabilitation are to:

    • help individuals stop using addictive substances or engaging in destructive behaviors

    • address the underlying issues that contribute to addiction

    • develop healthier coping strategies

    • improve their overall well-being and quality of life

  • Absolutely! Addiction treatment can be extremely effective in helping individuals overcome their substance use issues, other addictions or mental health challenges and lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

The effectiveness of treatment depends on several factors, including:

    • the individual's commitment to change

    • the severity of the addiction

    • the presence of co-occurring mental health concerns

    • the quality and appropriateness of the program

This is why we work with you to identify your specific needs to develop a treatment plan completely tailored to your life and goals.

It is important to note that addiction is a chronic condition, and relapse is a common part of the recovery process. However, with ongoing support, we believe our clients can successfully manage their addiction and achieve long-term recovery.

  • We utilize various therapeutic techniques in our addiction treatment and mental health treatment programs to address the unique needs of each client.

    Some common therapeutic techniques include:

    • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helps you identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors related to addiction or mental health illness.

    • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Focuses on teaching skills for emotion regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness.

    • Motivational Interviewing: Aims to enhance your motivation for change and support your commitment to recovery.

    • Family Therapy: Involves working with your family members to improve communication, strengthen relationships, and address family dynamics that may contribute to your addiction or mental health challenges.

    • Group Therapy: Provides space for you to share your experiences and learn from others in a supportive, structured setting.

    • Trauma-Informed Therapy: Addresses the underlying trauma that may contribute to addiction or mental health issues and helps you develop coping strategies.

    • Mindfulness-Based Therapies: Teaches you to be more present, aware, and nonjudgmental, which can help with emotion regulation and stress reduction.

These can all be used individually or in combination, depending on your specific needs and goals. Your therapist and case manager will work together to identify a treatment plan tailored to you to ensure the most effective approach.

  • Yes! That is one of the biggest benefits of outpatient programs. The flexibility of each program with time requirements and location means you can work around your work schedule, school schedule, or family needs and still access care and attend treatment. Outpatient programs are less time-intensive than inpatient treatment and depending on the treatment program that is best for you – could be anywhere from 4-5 hours a day or as little as 1 hour a month.

Addiction & Detox

  • The symptoms of addiction can vary depending on the substance or behavior, but generally include:

    • A strong compulsion to use the substance or engage in the behavior despite harmful consequences

    • Increased tolerance, needing more of the substance to achieve the same effect

    • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not using

    • Loss of control over usage, unsuccessful attempts to cut down or quit, and a significant amount of time spent obtaining, using, or recovering from the substance or behavior

    • Neglect of responsibilities at work, school, or home

    • Withdrawal from social and recreational activities

    • Continued use despite awareness of physical or psychological problems exacerbated by the substance or behavior

  • Recognizing the need for addiction treatment often starts with acknowledging how substance use impacts your life.

    Key indicators include:

    • Inability to control or reduce usage despite wanting to

    • Neglecting responsibilities at work, school, or home due to substance use

    • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not using

    • Continuing to use despite it causing relationship problems or health issues.

Additionally, if substance use is your primary method for coping with stress or emotions, or if you find your social activities revolving around substance use, these can also be significant signs.

Acknowledging these patterns is a critical first step. Consulting a healthcare professional can provide clarity and guide you towards the appropriate program based on your situation. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength and the first step towards recovery.

  • During the detoxification process, your body adjusts to functioning without the substance, which can lead to withdrawal symptoms. The nature and severity of these symptoms vary depending on the substance used, duration of use, and individual health factors.

    Common withdrawal symptoms include:

    • Nausea

    • Sweating

    • Agitation

    • Anxiety

Symptoms can range from mild to severe. Detox should ideally be supervised by medical professionals in a controlled environment to manage symptoms safely and provide support.

  • Supporting a loved one struggling with addiction involves a balance of compassion, boundaries, and encouragement towards seeking professional help.

Start by educating yourself about addiction to understand what your loved one is facing. Approach them with empathy and without judgment, expressing your concerns and willingness to support them.

Encourage them to seek professional help, offering to help them find resources or accompany them to appointments.

It's also important to set healthy boundaries to protect your own well-being and avoid enabling their substance use. Lastly, consider seeking support for yourself, such as joining a support group for families of individuals with addiction, to navigate your own feelings and stressors during this time.
